LEADERSHIP DAY COMING UP

Our 4th Annual Leadership Day is this Thursday, May 24th from 9:00-11:00 am.

Tomorrow is the last day to send in your RSVP form--let us know if you are coming so we can prepare accordingly.  Send the reply slip, write your teacher a note or email or even contact them via Class DOJO. We hope to see lots of families on Thursday morning,.

EVENTS THIS WEEK

Along with Leadership Day this week, we have a few other fun events!

  • Tuesday-3rd classes have their Greenfield Village field trip.
  • Wednesday-2nd-grade classes have their Detroit Zoo field trip.
  • Wednesday PM-4th graders can attend their Transition NIghts at their Upper Elementary school for next year--either Adams or Marshall.
  • Thursday PM-Our 3rd grade classes have their music program at Schweitzer at 6:00 pm.

Week of May 7th

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK

This upcoming week is Teacher Appreciation Week! Our SWBA group has coordinated fun things to celebrate our teachers all week long. It would be wonderful if students and/or families, wrote appreciation notes to their teachers. Notes and cards of appreciation are what keep teachers going and they treasure forever. Let your child’s teacher know the difference they make!

SUMMER SCHOOL INTEREST FORMS

If you’d like your child to be considered for a summer school placement, please fill out the back side of the summer school interest form and return to school no later than this Wednesday, April 25th. You will receive a notification at the beginning of June if your child has been placed in a summer school class.

We only have 2 fundraisers at Schweitzer and these funds purchase needed supplies, books, assemblies that make Schweitzer a great place for our kids.

BOOK FAIR IS COMING

Our Scholastic BOGO (Buy one, Get one free) Book Fair is this week! A schedule was sent home with your child’s classroom shopping day. Feel free to come shop with your child during their scheduled shopping time. The last call will be on Friday morning. Thank you to our SWBA parent group for coordinating!

LAST CALL FOR YEARBOOK ORDERS

We’ve been able to extend our Yearbook orders through Tuesday. If you’d like for your child to receive a yearbook, please send $15.00 cash or a check made out to Lifetouch by Tuesday.

Week of April 9th

SCHOOLS RESUMES TOMORROW

We hope everyone had a good Spring break! We will welcome all students back tomorrow morning. Students may enter the building starting at  8:15 am tomorrow morning and school officially starts at 8:30 am..

FAMILY SCIENCE ASSEMBLY

Bring a blanket, dinner or snacks and join us for a super fun science assembly on Tuesday night from 6:00-7:00 pm. Doug Scheer will be presenting and our students love him!

2nd TRIMESTER LEADERSHIP ASSEMBLIES

Our 2nd Trimester Leadership Assemblies will be on Friday, April 13th. We recognize all students at one of our 3 Leadership Ceremonies. If your child is being recognized at this ceremony, you will receive a note from your child’s teacher.

Week of March 26th

FINAL WEEK OF MARCH IS READING MONTH!

We have been celebrating all month long at Schweitzer! One of the best things to do at home is to read either to or with your child. This is one simple thing to do that boosts academic achievement and lifelong success. If your student has participated in at least 3  activities of their choice, each week, please sign and return their calendar.

This week we have an author visit, a fun reading assembly and a glow dance party.

PANCAKE DAY is TOMORROW!

King Pancake Day is the tomorrow, Monday, March 26th! It is the only, but super yummy, lunch choice.

SCHWEITZER BASKETBALL TEAM

Join us tomorrow night at 8:00 pm to watch the Schweitzer 4th Grade Basketball Team play the Hoover team. The game is at John Glenn High School, Auxiliary Gym #5.

VISITOR CHECK-IN

ALL VISITORS MUST CHECK-IN AT THE OFFICE ALWAYS. This has been a long-standing Schweitzer safety policy. Staff members are instructed, by me, to ask any visitors  if they have checked in--please do not be offended if you are asked this question. We LOVE our families and visitors but  this is for the safety of all our students and staff.

Also, it is helpful for our school safety if all families say goodbye each morning outside of the building.

Week of March 5th

MARCH IS READING MONTH!

March is Reading Month and we are celebrating all month long at Schweitzer! One of the best things to do at home is to read either to or with your child. This is one simple thing to do that boosts academic achievement and lifelong success.

Check the March is Reading Month calendar for activities. If students participate in the activities of their choice, please sign their calendar and return each week.

FAMILY BINGO FOR BOOKS NIGHT

Come join us this upcoming Thursday, March 8th for our annual BINGO FOR BOOKS night from 5:00-6:00 pm. All family members can play bingo, enjoy snacks and come home with an armful of books! Mr. Barber will be our host for this fun event.

Week of February 12th

STUDENT LIGHTHOUSE TEAM VALENTINE’S GRAMS

Our Student Lighthouse Team will extend selling Valentine’s Grams due to our Snow Day last Friday, It will be the final day to purchase them for $1.00 during lunch. Valentine Grams will be delivered on Valentine’s Day which is Wednesday.

PAJAMA DAY

Our last day before mid-winter break is this Friday, 2/16 and it will be an ALL-SCHOOL PAJAMA DAY! It will be a fun, cozy day at school before we kick-off mid-winter break.

NEW SPIRIT WEAR ORDERS

Mid-Year Spirit Wear order forms were sent home last week. There are lots of great options to choose from--order for your Schweitzer student and even for yourself! We love when we see are parents showing Schweitzer Pride!

VALENTINE’S SKATE NIGHT

We are having a Valentine’s Skate Night at Skatin’ Station in Canton this Friday, 2/9  from 6:00-8:00 pm. We hope to see everyone there! Look for a flyer to come with your student this week.

MID-WINTER BREAK

WWCSD PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT MEETING

Please join us from 6:00-7:00 pm on Wednesday, 1/31 at the Board of Education office to learn more about the agreement opportunity with the Michigan Department of Education and Wayne County RESA. There will be a brief presentation and a question and answer period.

MID-WINTER BREAK

There is no school for Wayne-Westland students during the week of Monday, 2/19 through Friday, 2/23. We will return to school on Monday, 2/26.

MATH NIGHT THANK YOU!

Thank you to all the families who attended our Family Math Night last Friday! We had a great turn-out and it was a fun event for all who came! Look for information on our Family Literacy NIght coming in March!

JANUARY SWBA MEETING

Our SWBA group will have their January meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, 1/16 at 4:00 pm in our MEDIA center. Everyone is welcome to attend!

FAMILY MATH NIGHT on THURSDAY

Family Math NIght is this Thursday, 1/18 from 5:00-6:00 pm.

Come have pizza and play some fun family games that help to build math skills. Increasing math proficiency for all students is one of our school-wide goals for students at Schweitzer and playing easy, fun games at home is one way to assist with this goal!

Turn in the reply slip to your child’s teacher no later than Wednesday if you’d like attend.

Week of January 8th

HAPPY 2018 & WELCOME BACK!

We return to school tomorrow, Monday, 1/8/2018. Remember students can enter the building at 8:15 am and are welcomed into their classrooms at 8:25 am. All goodbyes occur outside the building. If you need to come into the building, all visitors MUST check in at the office. We have this procedure to keep our building safe.

Week of December 18th

LAST WEEK BEFORE WINTER BREAK

We have a busy week ahead with classroom holiday parties on Thursday, 12/21 and a SUPRISE ALL-SCHOOL PAJAMA DAY on Friday, 12/22 which is our last day before Winter Break!

Winter Break is Monday, 12/25 through Friday, 1/5. We return to school on Monday, 1/8/2018.

LAST CALL for SANTA’S SECRET WORKSHOP

Our SWBA Santa’s Secret Workshop will be open tomorrow for last call purchases due to our Snow Day last week.

LEADERSHIP CEREMONIES

Our 1st trimester Leadership Ceremony is Monday, 12/18. We recognize every student at least once throughout the school year. If your child is receiving an award, you received an invitation from their teacher with their assembly time.

ADOPT-A-FAMILY WRAPPING PARTY

If you can help out wrapping gifts for the SWBA Adopt-A-Family program, join us at 4:00 pm in the gym on Monday, 12/18.

BOX TOP COLLECTION DAY

Tuesday, 12/19 is our next Box Top Collection Day. Send in Box Tops to help raise funds for our school! The top class receives the SWBA Box Top trophy which is filled with special treats for the class

1st and 2nd HOLIDAY MUSIC PROGRAMS

Our 1st and 2nd-grade classes have their holiday music programs on Tuesday, 12/19.

1st grade should arrive by 5:45 pm and will perform at 6:00 pm.

2nd grade should arrive by 6:45 pm and will perform at 7:00 pm.

ADOPT-A-FAMILY GIFTS DUE

All unwrapped gifts are due to the office by tomorrow, Monday, 12/11. Thank you to all individuals who were able to contribute to this long-standing Schweitzer tradition--it makes the holidays brighter for some of our families.

FOOD DRIVE

Our Holiday Food Drive runs through this Friday. The class that donates the most non-perishables will win a holiday pizza party. Mrs. Griffin’s class is in the lead, followed by Mrs. Bylo and Mrs. VanHulle’s classes.

SANTA’S SECRET WORKSHOP

Our SWBA Santa’s Secret Workshop will be open all this week! Students will be able to shop for gifts for families at school. See the SWBA note for your teacher’s shopping date.

FAMILY HOLIDAY NIGHT

Our 3rd Annual SWBA Family Holiday Night is this upcoming Friday, 12/15 from 5:30-7:00 pm. Wear your holiday sparkle and per the request of many students, we will have a dance with a DJ and students can take their picture with Santa! Concessions will be available, too. This event is for Schweitzer families only.

Week of December 4th

REPORT CARDS & PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE WEEK

  • Report cards will be sent home with all students on Monday, 12/4 and this week is Parent Teacher Conference Week.
  • Students will have a half-days of school on Tuesday, 12/5 and Thursday, 12/7 with dismissal at 11:40 am.
  • Conferences are Tuesday after dismissal until 6:30 pm and Thursday after dismissal until 8:00 pm.
  • All lost & found items will be out by the main entrance--be sure to check for any lost items!

GIVING TREE

  • A long tradition at Schweitzer is our SWBA-sponsored Adopt-a-Family. The Giving Tree is up by the office and still has many gift tags available. Please stop by and grab a gift tag--your donation will go directly to a Schweitzer student. All gifts are due to the office by Monday, 12/11.

REMINDER: TIME CHANGE & NO SCHOOL for STUDENTS

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Mrs. VanHulle’s kindergarten class! They were our Box Top winners and received the school trophy with a special surprise last week! Also, congratulations, to Ms. Mishowski’s 1st-grade class for collecting the most pieces of candy for Trunk or Treat!

This week our school be focusing on Habit 6: Synergize. We’ll continue to raise funds for our Leadership Day. Wear silly mixed matched clothes any day these week for .25 cents!

Week of October 16th

PARKING LOT REMINDERS

We are still looking for a few volunteers to assist with our parking lot arrival and dismissal. A huge thank you to Mr. London for helping out with bussing last week! If you would like to volunteer with arrival or dismissal, please contact me at brickeyk@wwcsd.net

AM ARRIVALS

All students line up outside their grade-level doors and this is where a good-bye should take place. If you do need to enter the building, all parent visitors must sign in at the office. It has come to my attention that not all visitors are signing in at the office. We ask everyone to do this for the safety of our building.

LUNCH APPLICATIONS

The deadline to apply for free or reduced lunch expire as of last week. Beginning tomorrow, October 16th, an alternative lunch is provided for students who have not been approved for free or reduced lunch status. If you received a note home on last Friday, please be sure to apply online at lunchapp.com or return the paper application tomorrow. I want to make sure all of our students get a full, healthy lunch.

TRUNK OR TREAT NIGHT

Our 2nd Annual SWBA Trunk or Treat Night will be on Thursday, October 26th from 6:00-7:30 pm. This event is for Schweitzer Families only.

Our Halloween Trunk or Treat Candy contest is underway through October 23rd. We are in need of individually packaged bags of candy or other Halloween treats. Week of October 10

PARKING LOT REMINDERS

We do have various staff members assigned to each grade level door, the bus drop-off area and our front parking lot. I’m very thankful that these staff members are volunteering their before school planning time to assist with the safety of our school! On occasion, our staff volunteers are absent or have meetings and we’d love any assistance. Tomorrow, Monday, October 2nd is King Pancake Day at Schweitzer. It is the only lunch choice.

FUNDRAISER KICK-OFF

The mobile dentist will be visiting our school this fall. If you’d like your child to see the dentist at school, please turn in the application form by Friday, 9/23.
